Tour the Great Alpine Road

Alpine Region in Summer A few hours drive from Melbourne takes you through miles and miles of mountain wilderness, full of natural wonders and beauty. Fresh alpine air with breathtaking landscapes, sweeping high plains with snow capped mountains, fertile valleys, flowing rivers and vineyards combine to capture unforgettable images of the north-eastern region of Victoria, an ideal and memorable holiday destination.

Depending on the time of year this region transforms into different adventure playgrounds. Winter brings thousands of Melburnians and visitors alike flocking to experience exhilarating skiing on snowfields of international standards. When the snow melts away a new world emerges, a world of adventure for bushwalking, canoeing and horse riding.

The region's many towns capture the historic influences and old world charms of yesteryear within the many museums, galleries, and antique shops waiting to be explored and discovered. The region is also well-known & recognised as Victoria's premier wine producing areas, with such names like Brown Brothers, Gherig Estate and All Saints.

The high country has a deep connection with Aboriginal culture, reflected in the many forms of rock art and artefacts located throughout the region. The area is also the birthplace of our famous poet A. B "Banjo" Patterson who wrote 'The Man From Snowy River'.

Not to be missed is Bright. A beautiful and thriving holiday centre located at the foothills of the High Country. Springtime is renowned for its many private gardens open to the public with azaleas and camellias in full bloom along with the many restaurants, cafes, bakeries and delis providing all the gourmet ingredients fit for picnic beside a river or parklands.

Driving a short distance further on brings you to the Kiewa Valley along with the townships of Tawonga and Mt Beauty located at the base of Mt Bogong. Discover and explore the majestic valley, hire bikes to ride or walk around or drop a line and fish in a mountain stream. From Mt Beauty, visit the charming Bogong Village surrounding Lake Guy.

For an authentic High Country experience, you should see the countryside on horseback. The High Country is the leading trail ride centre for the state. Take a tour with on of the many reputable operators and guides, as many of them are actual direct descendents from our early pioneers.

You don't have to be an expert to experience the pleasures of this adventurous journey as most operators cater to all riding needs and capabilities. Imagine reliving moments from the Man From Snowy River, starting with the popular ride from Mt Buller to Mt Stirling and onto Craig's Hut.
